Lila Jean Burk

Lila Jean Burk died on Thursday, April 13, 2017 at the age of 76 in Columbus, Ohio. Born December 27, 1940 to Edith and Harry Benham, Lila grew up on a farm in Versailles. After spending a couple years in Indianapolis and Dayton, Lila moved to Columbus in 1968. She spent most of her career in Human Resources at Shoe Corporation of America, Warner Cable, and Highlights for Children. She enjoyed golf, card games, crossword puzzles, time with her family and church. Ever the hostess, she took every opportunity to celebrate life with her friends and family.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 29 years and the love of her life, Ronald Lee Burk. Lila is survived by her three siblings, Ralph Benham of Myrtle Beach, SC, Janice Litschert of Blacksburg, VA, and Glen (Joyce) Benham of Myrtle Beach, SC. She leaves behind one daughter, Dana (David) Winegarner of Lewis Center OH; and three stepchildren, Robin (Henry) Matutino of St. Cloud FL, Doug (Darci) Burk of Canal Winchester OH, and Steve Burk of Columbus OH. She loved to tell everyone about her eleven grandchildren and two great granddaughters: Keli Jo (Jason) Isaacs, Christopher Burk, Ashley Fogleman, Zachary (Megan) Burk, Kaleigh Burk, Kaitlyn Winegarner, Taylor Burk, Joshua Winegarner, Tanner Burk, Clay Burk, Noah Burk, Alysha Fogleman, and Mia Burk.

Denzil L. Bultman

Denzil Lee Bultman, age 76, of Madison, entered this life on August 27, 1940 in Greensburg. He was the loving son of the late Cecil Albert, Sr. and Alice Fern Young Bultman. He was raised in Napoleon and graduated in 1958 from Napoleon High School. Denzil was raised in the St. John Lutheran Church in Napoleon.

He was inducted into the United States Army during the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged. Denzil was united in marriage to Sherron A. Miller, this union of 27 years was blessed with one son, Dennis. Denzil had worked as a truck driver for Grote Industries, OK Trucking, Madison Chemical, Reliance Electric, and Coca Cola. He also was a member of the Carpenter’s Union Local in New Albany and worked as a Pile Driver for Franki Foundation, building parking garages and with Newburg Construction helping to construct Marble Hill and also with Wilson Construction. In the 1960’s he served as a police officer with the Madison Police Department. He held membership in Jefferson Post 9 of the American Legion for 48 years and had served on the Honor Guard, Fraternal Order of Police “Stacks of Power Lodge”, Madison Moose Lodge No. 765 for 12 years, Fraternal Order of Eagles for 49 years, Madison Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1969, AmVets for 18 years. Denzil enjoyed IU Basketball, his Harley Davidson Trike, Colts Football, NASCAR, Poker Runs, avid Country Music fan of George Jones, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard and Johnny Cash. He was a devoted father, son, brother and friend.

Denzil died on Tuesday, April 18, 2017, at 1:58 a.m. at the King’s Daughters’ Hospital in Madison. Denzil will be missed by his loving son, Dennis L. Bultman and his fiancée, Julia A. Black of North Vernon; his best friends and caregivers, Robert and Elizabeth Hall of Madison; his loving sister, DeVota Dean of Osgood; his sister-in-law, Mary Ellen Bultman of Napoleon; several nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his father, Cecil Albert Bultman, Sr. died April 23, 2010, his mother, Alice Fern Young Bultman died September 29, 2007, his brothers, Cecil Albert Bultman, Jr., died October 7, 2011 and Donald Charles Bultman, died June 17, 1926, and his nephew, Karl Albert Bultman, died August 30, 1980.

Military honors will be conducted on Friday, April 21, at 3 p.m. at the Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery Chapel, 1415 North Gate Road in Madison, with interment to follow in the Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery. Friends may visit on Friday from 12 noon until 2:30 p.m. at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre, 325 Demaree Drive in Madison. Mary C. Salyers

Mary C. Salyers, 85, of Holton, passed away at 11:45 a.m., Tuesday, April 18, 2017 at the Christ Hospital in Cincinnati. She was born at Jackson, Kentucky on January 26, 1932 the daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth Barltett Cole. She was married to Paul Salyers on November 22, 1948 and he preceded her in death on March 24, 2002.

Survivors include grandchildren, Angie (Larry) Bilbrey of Columbus, Ohio, Donna (Eric) Bourke, Rob (Julie) Booster, and Roxanne (Jim) Poling all of Noblesville; 11 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren; one sister Bertie Myers of Greenwood. She was also preceded in death by her parents, her daughters Pamela Salyers and Belinda Booster; her sister Dorothy Poynter, and her brothers Seldon, Price, Edwin, Everett, Clarence, Raymond, and Dorsey Cole.

Mrs. Salyers was retired from the Muscatatuck State Developmental Center. Her hobbies included gardening, playing bingo and euchre, and entertaining. Mary was a member of the Dabney Baptist Church and the Versailles American Legion Auxiliary.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 21 at 12 p.m. at the Dabney Baptist Church with Rev. Michael Bell officiating. Burial will be in the Holton Cemetery. Visitation will begin at the church at 10 a.m. on Friday. Memorials may be given to the Dabney Baptist Church or the Holton Cemetery in care of the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles.

Laura Renee Smith

Laura Renee Smith, age 52, of North Vernon, formerly of Madison, died on Saturday, April 15, 2017. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, April 21 at 7 p.m., at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre, Madison. Interment will follow at a later date in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery on Halls Ridge near Canaan. Friends may call Friday from 4-7 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Laura Smith Memorial Fund.
