SR Raiders capture ORVC Championship after JCD Eagles provide deterrent

Eagles secure Raiders title run
After the South Ripley Raiders had taken their productive season to a 9-0 ORVC conference count, seconded only by the Rising Sun Shiners who trailed by one game at 8-1 (and that was a loss to SR) Rising Sun beat South Ripley in their second round action to knot the teams at 9-1 with time running out on sealing the 2017 ORVC Varsity Baseball Championship title.

South Ripley stepped up and defeated the Milan Indians 8-1 to hold ground but still needed someone to knock down the Shiners in the final days. That would come at the hands of Coach David Bradshaw’s Jac-Cen-Del Eagles on Wednesday evening May 17, as JCD literally knocked the sails out of the Shiner’s hopes of a shared ORVC Baseball Championship title with JCD winning the seven inning battle 14-7. For those who may not know it, Coach Bradshaw is the uncle of South Ripley Raider Head Coach Steve Franklin, therefore the Eagles victory was even more greatly appreciated.

A superb pitching effort by JCD Eagle senior Matthew Drockelman over the seven full innings resulted in his facing 34 Shiner batters, with a 94 total pitch count while allowing 7 runs, 4 earned on 9 hits, giving but one walk, 3 doubles and cutting down 4 shiners via strike-outs and charged with one hit batter.
The Shiners sent four different pitchers to the mound in an attempt to stop the bleeding of which included: sophomore Braden Bush – 1 IP, where he threw 42 pitches while facing 9 Eagle batters where he was charged with 3 earned runs on 4 hits, 2 wild pitches, 2 walks and 3K’s; sophomore Jacob Bovard – 3 IP, where he threw 63 pitches while facing 17 Eagle batters where he was charged with 4 runs, 1 earned on 3 hits, 3 walks and 2K’s; freshman Stephen Jiminez – 1 2/3 IP, where he threw 32 pitches while facing 12 Eagle batters where he was charged with 7 runs on 4 hits, 2 walks, a wild pitch, a HBP and a K; and sophomore Colby Ritter – 1 1/3 IP, where he threw 10 pitches while facing 4 Eagle batters where he allowed no runs on one hit, retiring one via the K.

So. Ripley vs. Shawe
The South Ripley Raiders stepped up to defeat their final ORVC opponent, the Madison Shawe Hilltoppers 10-0 in a Five-Run Rule five inning game at Shawe on Wednesday evening May 17, as JCD was knocking off the Rising Sun Shiners in clearing the path for an South Ripley conference championship outright title. Over five full innings, the Raiders enjoyed a positive pitching performance from the mound behind senior Cory Walker, who earned the 10-0 win, as he faced 18 batters while delivering just 48 pitches resulting in 0 runs on 3 hits, one walk and 4 strike-outs.
