Like Old Times Cruisin’ the Square revives Versailles tradition
Austin Smith has recently started to revive the old times of cruising on the square in Versailles. This photo was taken in August at the first cruise that Smith promoted.
A familiar Versailles tradition is making its way back around the square, thanks to one local resident’s desire to connect generations through a shared love of cars, trucks and motorcycles.
Austin Smith, Versailles, recently launched “Like Old Times Cruisin’ the Square,” an event inspired by the stories he heard while growing up in Versailles.
“The memory that came up the most was cruising the square,” Smith shared. “Everyone’s stories seemed to be the same. They had fun, met people because of their cars and became friends. For many of them, the square was the place to be every weekend.”
His father, Jason Smith, was among those who frequently shared memories of cruising with friends. During one of their conversations, Austin suggested bringing the tradition back. Although his father explained that similar efforts had encountered challenges in the past, Austin decided it was worth another try.
“You only live once, so I decided to give it a shot,” he said.
The first two cruises attracted approximately 25 vehicles to the Versailles square, with participants gathering near the Ripley County Annex and White Rabbit. Smith hopes attendance will continue to grow as word spreads.
All vehicles are welcome, regardless of their age, style or condition. Smith said the event is not about judging who has the nicest ride, but about bringing people together and celebrating the interest they share.
Another goal is to recreate cherished memories for older residents while giving younger generations the opportunity to make memories of their own. Smith hopes younger participants will learn from longtime car enthusiasts and develop an appreciation for building, maintaining and enjoying cars, trucks and motorcycles.
He also expressed his appreciation to his family, community members and local businesses that have helped turn his idea into a reality.
“I never thought I would have the support of so many amazing local businesses,” Smith said. “None of this would be possible without my family and the businesses around us.”
Smith is considering holding Like Old Times Cruisin’ the Square twice each month as the event becomes established, with the possibility of scheduling it more frequently if participation continues to increase.
