The Quilter’s Nook, located on US 421 in Versailles, is celebrating 10 years of great service to the community on Oct. 21. Chris Combs, owner, is not only a successful business owner in Versailles, but also a great support of the community and a great friend to many, even the out-of-town clients that come to her store for their quilting needs. The great atmosphere and customer service draws the crowd to her for her creative quilting and sewing shop.
Chris lives in Osgood. She was a kindergarten teacher for nine years in Phoenix, Arizona before moving to Indiana. Chris told The Versailles Republican, “I moved here and married my husband and had many great years with him.”
Chris worked at Grand Victoria Casino for 19 years. She has done quilting as her hobby for many years. In 2008, she began researching how to open her own business. “I took the plunge, quit my job, bought the property in Versailles and built a building. I opened my business and have had a positive response ever since.”, Chris said.
She (Chris) has also been involved with donating quilts to many organizations such as The Children’s Hospital, hospitals in Indianapolis with child trauma patients and fire departments. She works with Quilts for Kids, and with clients sews one day a month preparing the donated quilts.
Chris has had a great support from clients, friends and family since she opened. Linda Mejaski is not only one of her long-time friends, but also really enjoys helping Chris out any way she can. Linda told The Versailles Republican they have been friends for 15 years and started quilting at Jac-Cen-Del years ago. Several teachers would meet after school to quilt just for fun and Chris would join them. “For ten years she has been gracious enough to let me help her at her shop, The Quilter’s Nook. She has taught me so much. She is beyond patient with people and is just the best!”
Karen Lowry is one of Chris’s long-time clients that comes from North Vernon. Karen recently came in last week for assistance picking out fabric for her new quilt she was making. “Chris is just so educational making it a great experience every time when coming to her shop. She has that knack for putting colors together. She is very inspirational, and I just love coming here.”, Karen stated to The Versailles Republican.
Chris has clients that travel from all over to come for the creative, bright and knowledgeable shop experience. Another favorite of her clientele, Ruth Roy, came to town from Indianapolis for a quilt retreat at The Quilter’s Nook. Ruth noted, “I have known Chris since 2014. I come down at least once a year which makes it a very reminiscent time for me personally as I used to own my own quilt shop. She has the same bright fabrics that I had in my shop.”
Networking with new and old friendships is what helps keep business growing at The Quilter’s Nook. Jo Santen, of Versailles, is another great customer who comes to stop by the shop every day as she lives right next door. Jo told The Versailles Republican, “I have quilted for at least 45 years. I come and sew at The Quilter’s Nook every Friday. Lots of comradery, lots of nice people here.” Jo has been coming since Chris opened in 2014 and said that Chris is very helpful, a great friend and lends an ear to anyone. It is exciting to come in the shop and see new things-new fabrics, new supplies and new techniques. It really expands a quilter’s horizon visiting The Quilter’s Nook.
“Chris deserves every drop of success she gets. She never misses work and is very determined and no one is going to get in the way of her success. Congratulations and Happy 10 years of service.!!”, concluded Linda Mejaski.
