Let Us Pause To Honor the Memory of (RET) MSGT Johnny “John” Dale LeGrand, Sr. USMC.

MSGT Johnny “John” Dale LeGrand, Sr., USMC age 77, of Hanover, Indiana, entered this life on December 6, 1946 in Licking, Missouri. He was the loving son of the late John and Wanda Allen LeGrand. He was raised in Missouri until the age of eight and the family moved to Jefferson County. He attended Dupont High School and completed his education in the United States Marine Corps. He was united in marriage to Mary Jo Ringwald and this union was blessed with sons, Johnny Jr. and Keith. A later marriage was to Maureen Abney and they were blessed with children, Glenn, Taylor and Logan. He was inducted into the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. He rose to the rate of Master Sergeant serving in the 4th Marine Battalion stationed in New Orleans, Louisiana. He retired from the Marine Corps on October 1, 1995 and was honorably discharged receiving the Republic of Vietnam Civil Actions Unit Citation, the Certificate of Commendation (2nd award), the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm and Unit Citation, Navy Achievement Medal, Navy Unit Commendation (2nd award), Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Combat Action Ribbon, Vietnam Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal (6th award), Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Meritorious Unit Commendation Medal. John then worked with his brother, Jack and drove for LeGrand Trucking Company for five years. He then taught machine trades at the Southeastern Indiana Career Center in Versailles, Indiana for 18 years. He worked as a veterans representative for five years at the Jefferson County Veterans Service Office in downtown Madison. On December 29, 2012, John was united in marriage to Martha Joyce Calvert at her home in Hanover. John enjoyed life and was a great collector of things. He enjoyed going to auctions and caring for his lawn. He was baptized and a member of the Lancaster Baptist Church in Lancaster, Indiana and held membership in the Brookville American Legion Post. He enjoyed the affection of his cat, Smokey. John died on Thursday, October 10, 2024, at 9:34 p.m. at his home near Hanover, Indiana.

John will be missed by his loving wife of nearly 12 years, Martha Joyce Calvert LeGrand of Hanover, Indiana; his children, Johnny Dale LeGrand, Jr. of Orlando, Florida, Keith LeGrand and his wife, Nicole of Madison, Indiana, Glenn LeGrand of Deputy, Indiana, Taylor LeGrand of Madison, Indiana, Logan LeGrand of Louisville, Kentucky; his step son, Donald Gale Moreland and his wife, Vicki of Carrollton, Kentucky; his step daughters, Kimberly Dawn Gibson and her husband, Mike of Madison, Indiana, Angela Kay Grubbs and her husband, Mike of Madison, Indiana; his grandchildren, Brian LeGrand, Amanda Nunn (Dakota), Kennedy Moore, and Lyric LeGrand; 3-great grandchildren; 9-step grandchildren; 15 step great grandchildren; his sisters, Connie Day and her husband, Danny of Madison, Indiana, Peggy LeGrand of Madison, Indiana, Susie LeGrand of Charleston, South Carolina, Mary Jo Walters and her husband, Ed of Hanover, Indiana, Rose Conway and her husband, Craig Bergeron of Madison, Indiana; his brothers, Jack LeGrand and his wife, Shirley of Kent, Indiana, Danny Green of Madison, Indiana; his step brothers, Gene Green and his wife, Sara of Hanover, Indiana, Jim Green and his wife, Janet of Columbus, Indiana; his step sisters, Claris Addleman of Dupont, Indiana, Glenda Falor and her husband, Isaac of Edinburgh, Indiana; his sisters in law and brothers in laws, Barbara Johnson and her husband, Jimmy of Hanover, Indiana, Bonnie Calvert of Lexington, Indiana, Judy McMahan of Louisville, Kentucky, Mark Calvert and his wife, Marge of Madison, Indiana; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives . He was preceded in death by his father, John LeGrand, his mother, Wanda Allen LeGrand Green, his step father, Glenn Green, his step sister and step brother, Donna Pulliam and Harold Green, his brothers in law and sisters in law, Bernard Addleman, John William Calvert, Ronald Calvert, Sharon Abbott, Patricia Box, and Robert Michael Calvert, his step granddaughters, Samantha Gibson and Nicole Renee Moreland, his step great grandson, Bradley Grubbs.

FUNERAL CEREMONY

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, October 16, 2024, at 1:00 p.m., by Pastor Mark Calvert at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre, 325 Demaree Drive in Madison, Indiana. Interment will follow in the Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 1415 North Gate Road in Madison, Indiana.

VISITATION

Friends may call Tuesday, October 15, 2024, from 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. and Wednesday, October 16, 2024 from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre, 325 Demaree Drive Madison, Indiana.

MILITARY HONORS

A final salute with military honors will be provided by the Major Samuel Woodfill Post No. 9 of the American Legion and the U.S. Marine Corps Ceremonial Unit.
