Moores Hill looking to buy old school bldg.

The Town of Moores Hill is in the process of purchasing the old elementary school building that was closed in 2021, according to Tammy Wismann.

The Town wants to develop part of the building into senior housing. They would like to keep the gym as a community center, but aren’t sure at this time due to needed repairs etc.

Wismann said the town has limited funding but would really like to see the building put to good use instead of deteriorating. Until the building purchase is completed, the group is trying to hold some community events to help raise funding to maintain the building.

Right now ball teams have been using the gym for practices, and they would like to open that up for open gym for a fee. “We are in the process of cleaning out the building. It was not left in very good condition, sadly. When the final paperwork is completed, we will move forward with more activities in the building,” noted Wismann. She said the gym was built in 1939 and has been a huge part of Moores Hill’s school history with many basketball games held for around 80 years.

They will be having their first fundraiser, the Moores Hill Art and Craft Show on August 16 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 14733 Main Street. They have already secured 25 vendors, along with three food trucks – Twisted Tater, Short’s Sweets and Tiki Treats. They are planning to have a bouncy/obstacle house for the children to enjoy for a small fee, door prizes and much more.

The event will have acoustic music donated by John and Susanne (from Madison) with guitar, mandolin and fiddle performing Old Mountain Music. The Southeastern Indiana Woodturners will be there to turn pens as keepsakes and they will have their artwork of wood bowls, vases, pens and much more to display and sell that day.
