The Versailles community began hearing the sad news that a fatality had occurred in an accident Tuesday evening, after multiple rescue units responded to US 421 about seven miles south of town. The crash claimed the life of Ashley Hunger, 34, of Versailles, who was a passenger in the 2011 Toyota Highlander that lost control. She was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Police are not saying the reason the driver lost control, but that was about the time an icy/snow mix was beginning to cover the roadway, and several accidents were reported due to the weather.
Hunger was traveling in the Highlander, driven by Zachery Richardson, 30 of Versailles. The report from the Ripley County Sheriff’s Office noted that when they lost control, their vehicle was struck in the passenger side by a 2015 Chrysler Town and Country vehicle, driven by Carol Austin, 30 of Versailles. Three juveniles in the Toyota, along with both drivers were transported by EMS for their injuries.
Police say no drugs or alcohol are believed to be factors in the crash.
The Ripley County Sheriff’s Office was assisted on the scene by the Versailles Police Department, Osgood Police Department, Indiana Conservation, Indiana State Police, Versailles Fire Department, New Marion Fire Department, Ripley County EMS Versailles/Milan and Sunman Rescue 20, along with 911 dispatch.
Funeral services for the beautiful mother of three are pending at Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home, Versailles.
