Batesville’s duo of Carson Weiler and Adam Brewer (pictured) became the first Bulldog pair to score a regional championship in the same season in over 20 years. Weiler was the 120-pound champion while Brewer was tops in the 144-pound class.
The coverage area once again flexed its muscle in another round of the postseason as a combined eight wrestlers from Milan and Batesville are moving on after top four finishes at the IHSAA Boys Wrestling Regional on Saturday at Richmond.
Top four finishers in each weight class automatically punched tickets to this upcoming weekend’s semi-state. Of the eight advancing, four were regional champions on Saturday.
That starts with the Baylor brothers from Milan. Freshman Mason Baylor remains unbeaten on the season at 37-0 and captured a regional championship with a pinfall just 37 seconds into the championship match of the 106-pound class against Franklin County’s Colton Seale (29-5). As for Matthew Baylor, who is undefeated and a former state finalist, he took a technical fall in the 132-pound class. He dominated South Dearborn’s Liam Hubbartt (29-9) and led by a 19-4 score when the match was called.
Batesville sophomore Carson Weiler also hoisted a regional crown, the first of his career. Weiler in the 120-pound class easily ran through two opening matches before beating Rushville’s Briggs Tackett (25-10) by pinfall at the 3:16 mark in the regional finals. That brings Weiler’s overall record to 43-3 going into this weekend.
Teammate Adam Brewer (44-1), a junior, took the title in the 144-pound class after beating Greensburg’s Carson Beagle (28-8) by pinfall at the 1:18 mark. This marked the first time in over 20 years that Batesville has boasted two wrestlers as regional champions in the same year.
Four others from Milan are also advancing. Beckett Langferman and Kayden McClellan were each third place finishers and taking fourth place spots were Jaydin Disbro and Kolton Harris.
The IHSAA Boys Wrestling Semi-State will be this Saturday at New Castle Fieldhouse and begin at 9 a.m. Top four finishers in each weight class will advance to the state finals.
