Get ready to rumble for a great cause
Get ready to rumble at Milan High School on March 29 with Battle on the Border. This will be a memory in the books for Milan March Madness. Battle on the Border live pro wrestling is teaming up with Milan Community Dollars for Scholars for a great cause. Proceeds will benefit the Eli King Memorial Scholarship and Milan Community Dollars for Scholars.
Elija (Eli) Austin King was a student at Milan schools for 12 years. He was very active in sports and volunteered his time with the Ripley County Humane Society. He was also involved with the Veteran’s Hospital in Cincinnati, OH. Eli enjoyed his time as a cub scout with Pack 613 and then joining the Boy Scout with Troop 631. Eli earned the rank of Eagle Scout 2011. In 2012, he was awarded for his service project and was awarded for all scouting. Eli furnished 35 apartments for homeless veterans. He went out and raised money, collected furniture and then made a miracle happen for veterans.
The experience was life changing for him. After graduation from Milan High School, Eli went and served in the military with Marine Corps where he excelled in the School of Infantry at Camp Pendleton receiving the Paul Ison Award, voted by his fellow Marines as the “Marine I would like to serve with in combat”. He was married in October of 2021 to Maya Howie from San Clemente, CA. He received honorable discharge after deployment two times in service in June of 2022.
About a month before Eli died, he encountered a homeless person at a gas station and took him out to dinner and shared some fellowship with this person. He was always spreading his good word to anyone especially those in need. On October 15, 2023, Eli was tragically killed in a car crash where he left his legacy unspoken. His family wanted to continue with his legacy and set up the Eli King Memorial Scholarship as that what Eli would have wanted done. The scholarship is awarded to the student that most demonstrates service to others.
The first year for the scholarship was in 2024. The amount of the scholarship was $720.00 in memory of Eli’s football number, 72. The entire amount was donated by a fellow Eagle Scout who also wore the number 72 for Milan. The family would like to make Eli King Memorial Scholarship an honor for any student fulfilling the giving back or for their service to the community.
