Holton Jamboree set for Sept. 7
Holton Fire Chief Dale Comer, along with Daryl Franklin, attended the Holton Town Board meeting July 10, at the Holton Community Building.
They were there on official business about the upcoming Holton Jamboree, which is set for September 7, at the park in town.
This event was something people looked forward to several years ago when it was held annually. Organizers of the 2024 event say they have nearly five bands committed for the day which will begin at noon and run until 11:00 p.m. There will be food available with the fire department serving pork burgers and chicken, along with sides. Food trucks will be on hand.
“We wanted to bring this back for the community,” Comer explained, as he remembered the days of the Sunbonnet Sue and Strawhat Sam Contest and more that made the event so much fun.
The town board is committed to helping any way they can with this fundraiser for the fire department.
The fire department has not had their annual draw from the trustee this year, which makes it difficult for them to operate. They have held numerous fundraising events to defray costs, but still need funds. The town board will be giving them their usual money ($5,000) and will get a new contract signed from the fire department.
Comer also asked about the new tax the county has for fire and police. The Board said they will look into that and could possibly do an additional appropriation. The Chief reported that the inaugural Jeep/ATV ride went great with 101 vehicles, and 250 people participating.
In other business: Erin Thomas with LifeTime Resources asked for a $200 donation for the year. She noted several people in the Holton area were assisted by their organization. LifeTime has to raise money for matching monies from the federal and state governments. The Board approved her request.
Eric Wall, town employee, was approved for a $2.00 raise per hour. “He’s doing a great job,” Angi Farrell, clerk-treasurer, noted.
The Board approved the $82.95 for Farrell to renew her notary.
Micah Lohrum of Lohrum Electrical, was in attendance to request copies of bids. He noted he had left numerous e-mail requests and calls that were never answered. Farrell noted she would email the requested paperwork to him by Monday, July 15.
The September meeting for the Board will be changed to September 4, instead of the usual second Wednesday of the month.
Stratton will get a bid for a plow truck and LED lights in the town building. It was also noted that some town equipment that isn’t used any more will be sold. Farrell will check with the town’s attorney to find out how she needs to go about this. They are going to purchase an edger to get a finer clean when mowing.
Mark Salyer reported everything was working fine at the lagoons.
Attending the meeting were Farrell, Stratton, and Phyllis Nighbert. Paul Hughes was not in attendance.
