There have been a lot of close ballgames that have not gone in favor of Jac-Cen-Del softball this spring but Monday night a huge weight was finally lifted as a late rally in Osgood sent the Lady Eagles to their first win of the season, winning 15-9 over Switzerland County.
The two teams met this past Saturday with Switzerland County winning 5-4 after scoring a walk-off run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Trailing 1-0 early in the second inning it looked like the Lady Pacers (3-13, 2-7) would not have to wait until late to gain control, reeling off seven unanswered runs soon after and leading 7-1 going into the bottom of the fourth. But that’s when Jac-Cen-Del made its run. The Lady Eagles trimmed the deficit to 7-4 in the bottom of the fourth and then erupted for seven runs in the fifth frame.
Jac-Cen-Del after six complete innings led 15-8, scoring four runs in the bottom of the sixth. Switzerland County scored a lone run in the top of the seventh but the Lady Eagle defense rode its offense’s momentum and sealed win No. 1.
The Lady Eagles totaled 10 hits, three of which came from senior Savannah Steele who also had four RBI and three runs scored. Payton Adams went 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI, Bailey Groth scored three times and had two base hits and Taylor Swinney knocked in three runs on a hit and scored twice. Kaylee Semyour added a single.
Groth added a pair of stolen bases and got the pitching win. She allowed nine runs -seven earned- on 12 hits in seven innings with seven strikeouts and three walks.
The game served as Senior Night for Jac-Cen-Del. Groth, Steele and Ashlynn Moorman were all recognized prior to the contest.
Jac-Cen-Del (1-16, 1-8 ORVC) was at Rising Sun on Wednesday and is scheduled to face Southwestern (Hanover) tonight in a conference game.
