There was no question who was the favorite on Tuesday night at North Branch Golf Course. The question was how many strokes would they win by? In the end, the answer was 76 strokes and Batesville cruised to its 14th-straight Ripley County Girls Golf Championship.
The championship began in 2005 with Batesville winning four in a row before South Ripley was able to grab its first crown in 2009. Batesville’s new streak started the year after in 2010.
Just two complete scoring teams were able to be fielded on Tuesday. Batesville shot a nine-hole team score of 155 and put its four scoring golfers on the All-County Team while Jac-Cen-Del was runner-up with a 231. Both Milan and South Ripley had just three golfers in action.
Another Weiler is an individual county champion as Addyson Weiler captured her first, following in the footsteps of older sister Emma Weiler, a Batesville graduate. Addyson’s even-par 35 was a leaderboard low and earned her County MVP honors after making the All-County Team last year. Teammate Ava South was second overall with a 38 and Josie Meyer placed third at 39. Zoey Ahern finished fourth after carding a 43 and both Alexis Gallagher and Grace Saner shot a 49 in a non-scoring round.
Milan’s Kayla Walke made a second-straight appearance on the All-County Team, filling out the squad after placing fifth overall with a 48. Grace Bedel and Kaitlynn Hicks shot a 60 and 64 respectively for the Lady Indians. Nautia Williams led Jac-Cen-Del with 54 and that was followed by a 58 from Emma Wagner and a 59 from Claire Heilers. Julia Meyer rounded out Lady Eagle scoring with a 60.
Anna Block remained South Ripley’s top golfer, firing a 54 after last week saw her earn two match medalist honors and a spot on the All-Conference Team. Mady Hicks followed Block and shot a 62 and Emma McCarty wrapped up Tuesday with a 66.
Batesville is now 71-21 overall this season and golfs in the Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference Championship on Saturday at the Greensburg Country Club. South Ripley, Milan and Jac-Cen-Del all return to the course within the coming days as schedules continue to be finalized.
