Local author releases another novel ‘The Last Resort’
No stranger to putting his thoughts on paper, Ron Prosser of Versailles, has written another book, The Last Resort.
The retired English and history teach at Milan Community schools after 33 years, has written human interest articles for various newspapers throughout the state. He also wrote the novella ‘In Search of the Jolly Green Giant’ in 2007. He compiled a collection of World War II letters with Roger Moon entitled, “Visions of Home.”
In his latest endeavor Prosser, who is originally from Frenc Lick, wrote the book as a fundraiser for the Educational Foundation in honor of an old classmate who worked there for 36 years. He passed away this summer from ALS.
The Prologue goes like this: In the early 1900’s a small, secluded, midwestern resort town is struck with tragedy when its main employer is wiped out in a gigantic fire. This event sends the mostly blue-collar citizenry into an economic turmoil of uncertainty that opens this small town to an influx of evil. The local workers are thrust into the only work available, the rebuilding of the town’s lavish resort for wealthy guests from all over the Midwest and beyond.
None of the residents have as deep an understanding of this town’s metamorphous as Robert Freeman, a teenager, whose father owns the local semi-professional baseball team that entertains the hotel guests with their high level of athleticism. As a person of color, who has been granted a degree of acceptance into white society due to his father’s business influence, he straddles the realities of both worlds. He uses his unique status, and wits, to battle a shady new investor in the rebuild of the resort. The battle intensified when it becomes evident that the new owner not only wants total control of their livelihood, but also their souls.
Prosser will be in the front lobby of the SR boys’ basketball game with Milan on Jan. 23 and will soon have a book signing at Tyson Library.
