Local schools honored by IHSAA

For the second year in a row, the Indiana High School Athletic Association has recognized numerous schools around the state for exemplary sportsmanship during the past sports calendar and four coverage area schools were among those honored with All-Sportsmanship Awards.
The IHSAA released its award winners on Tuesday afternoon. Sportsmanship continues to be one of the most promoted causes by the organization in recent years.
317 schools were honored with First Team All-Sportsmanship honors and that included Batesville, Milan and South Ripley. Other nearby schools with first team accolades included Connersville, Franklin County, Greensburg, Jennings County, Lawrenceburg, Madison, Rushville, Shawe Memorial, South Dearborn, South Decatur, Southwestern (Hanover) and Switzerland County.
Oldenburg Academy was one of 52 schools earning Honorable Mention All-Sportsmanship. Joining the Twisters were Hauser and North Decatur.
A points system through the IHSAA Sportsmanship and Leadership Program determined a school’s placement among the two groups. Schools awarded 100 points or more earned the first team title while honorable mention schools had racked up 95 points through the system.
“We want to acknowledge and congratulate those schools who have exemplified sportsmanship as indicated by their sportsmanship scores,” says IHSAA Assistant Commissioner Jane Schott, who administers the IHSAA sportsmanship program. “By recognizing schools at the end of season, we hope this encourages schools to celebrate those programs who show exemplary sportsmanship.”
Point deductions could also be handed out throughout each respective sports season. Deductions could come in the form of ejections of players, coaches, administrators and fans.
Exact point totals for each IHSAA school were not provided in the organization’s press release.
