Milan School Board recognizes Roell at monthly meeting

Kayla Roell is recognized by the Milan School Board at the most recent meeting held on February 17.
Hard work the students had put in was showcased at the Milan School Board meeting last Monday evening, February 17. Senior Shelby Williams and JAG teacher, Carol Schmidt were at the meeting with information. Shelby had recently traveled to Washington D.C. and shared her trip with the Board. She earned a First-Place finish in a public speaking category at the Indiana State Conference and will be competing at the next level. Ms. Schmidt thanked the board members for their support of the program.
Also at the meeting were Kayla Roell and Wrestling Coach Ron Prokanski. Board members recognized Kayla for winning Girls Wrestling State Championship. Kayla ended her season with a 36-1 record and is looking forward to next season. It was noted that Kayla brings back to Milan the third state victory in school history and the first female winner and first state wrestling winner.
Under personnel the Board granted Alexis Franklin maternity leave, retirement request from Roger Smith, resignation of William Milburn, custodian, and resignation of Hannah Lohrum, JV Volleyball Coach.
Kim Johnson was recommended for custodian, and the Spring Sports roster as provided at the athletic director was approved.
Steve Knecht was appointed as a member of the Milan 21st Century School Building Corporation Board of Directors. He will replace Michael Alloway due to Alloway’s election to the School Corporation’s Board of School Trustees.
Jeff Qualkinbush with Barnes and Thornburg requested approval of the Fourth Amendment to the 2010 Amendment to Lease Resolution for the elementary expansion and renovation and the district-wide facility projects. Parameters of the lease are identical to what was presented and discussed at the December board meeting. With no petitions or remonstrance notices filed, a preliminary approval was requested, and a special meeting will be held in March for the final vote.
Hal Kovert requested approval of using a construction manager as Constructor method of construction delivery for the elementary and Prickle Property projects. This will be posted in the local papers.
In other business, the Board approved a request to change tuition fees for the 2025-2026 Preschool Program. A request for Dan Goris to attend the INSRO State Conference and the Annual Law Enforcement Training was approved. A request for Kris Bushhorn to attend a Grant Writing Workshop was approved.
Milan Summer Softball was given permission to use the middle school gym for pictures in May. Milan Aquatics can use the pool for summer swim practices and meets and Genesis: Pathways to Success was granted permission to use the middle school classrooms for an esports camp in June.
