Murphy, Mobley win EIAC titles

Batesville wrestling closed out its regular season this past weekend by competing in the Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference Championship at Franklin County.
With just nine wrestlers on the roster, Batesville finished in sixth among EIAC teams at the meet with 129 points. East Central won its fourth-straight conference championship with 280.5 points while Franklin County was runner-up with 182 points. Greensburg’s 150 points, Lawrenceburg’s 140 points and South Dearborn’s 133 points rounded out the top five. Connersville and Rushville finished seventh and eight place with 106 points and 90 points respectively.
It was a big day for both Alex Murphy and Josh Mobley as both gave Batesville an individual conference championship. Murphy went 3-0 on the day with a forfeit victory, pinfall win and a 13-3 decision in the 120-pound class while Mobley inside the 170-pound class went 3-0 with two pinfalls and a 4-3 decision victory in the championship match.
For Murphy, one of his three wins allowed him his 100th career victory as a Bulldog. Mobley’s career wins reached 113 in the EIAC meet which puts him third on the all-time wins list in program history.
Batesville’s Damien Dance, Jy’lil Chappell and Chase Hamilton all went 3-1 on the day and placed third in their respective weight classes. David Maher, Christian Garcia and Max Amberger each went 2-2 and finished in fifth place.
The IHSAA Boys Wrestling State Tournament kicks off on Saturday, January 29 with local sectional action set to be hosted by South Dearborn. Batesville enters the 11-team tournament with a 19-9 regular season record.
