Class 3A No. 12 Batesville baseball opened its season with a pair of victories last week, both at home.
The Bulldogs were a 13-3 winner on Thursday against Rising Sun and then won a 5-4 battle on Saturday morning against Walton-Verona out of Kentucky.
Sophomore Carson Meyer started the season with a solo home run against Rising Sun and the blue and white never looked back. Batesville scored five runs in that bottom of the first inning and rattled off two more runs in the bottom of the second. Rising Sun (0-2) made it a 7-3 game in the top of the third but the Bulldogs scored six unanswered runs in response the rest of the way.
Meyer went on to a 2-for-5 day with two runs and an RBI. Jackson Elston was 2-for-3 with a double, three RBI and a run, Noah Weigel went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run and Dane Dudley tripled and drove in three runs. Jackson Peetz scored three runs and put together two hits and Ronan Post was 3-for-4 with three runs. Brayden Maple doubled and brought in a run.
The pitching victory went to Meyer who lasted four innings and allowed three unearned runs on just one hit with six strikeouts and three walks. Maple finished the game, striking out two over two innings and allowing two hits.
Will Cumberworth was the losing pitcher for Rising Sun, lasting just that first inning and giving up five earned runs on five hits with two walks.
Saturday morning was all about Batesville junior William Huber who got the job done both at the plate and on the mound. Huber went 3-for-5 with a double and drove in all five Bulldog runs. Toeing the bump, he earned the pitching win after throwing five innings and giving up four runs -one earned- on six hits with four strikeouts and two walks.
Dane Dudley earned the save after striking out all three batters he faced in the top of the seventh. Dudley, Maple and Weigel had a single and double apiece and Post tallied a single with two runs scored. Batesville trailed 3-1 after two innings but took the lead with four runs between the third and fourth frames. Walton (6-6) scored a run in the top of the fifth and neither team scored after that.
Walton’s Will Hurles went 3-for-4 with a double, home run, three RBI and two runs. He was also the losing pitcher, giving up four earned runs on six hits through three innings with three strikeouts and three walks.
Batesville (2-0) began Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference play last night at Connersville.
