Batesville’s Brayden Maple swats away a North Decatur shot on Friday night while teammate James Hughes looks on. Despite a Saturday loss at Hauser, the Hughes/Maple duo combined for 43 points in a win over the Chargers.
South Ripley boys basketball suffered a brief setback on Friday night against a team from inside the Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference but came back strong the next night against another EIAC squad, bashing Lawrenceburg 70-39 on Saturday in Dearborn County.
The Raiders have won five of their last six games. Friday’s 64-51 loss at home to Connersville had snapped a four-game win streak.
Lawrenceburg (6-11) never threatened. South Ripley led 14-6 after one quarter and buried the Tigers early with a 21-6 run to end the first half. The Tigers also were the victim of a 19-9 Raider run in the fourth period which only added to a dominant evening for the green and white.
It was quite a night for Raider sophomore Eli Gilpin who went off for 28 points with 15 points coming from the three-point line. Gilpin, who scored 11 points in the third quarter, tallied 14 points in each half.
Sophomore teammate Blake Gunter eight of his 14 points in the first half and Dylan Jessee added a trio of 3-pointers for nine points. Lawrenceburg was led by Kaleb Cole’s 12 points and 11 points from Evan Lewis.
South Ripley’s loss to Connersville on Friday at home saw the Spartans break free of an early tie by using to their advantage a 20-6 run in the second quarter that essentially created a double-digit lead that lasted the rest of the evening. The Raiders despite that margin did outscore Connersville’s offense in the second half by a 34-33 edge.
Connersville (11-7) guard Hunter Allen dazzled with 28 points including 13 points in that pivotal second quarter. He had 18 points total in the first half. Jay McMullen and Chase Corder added 12 points and 10 points respectively.
Volz had 14 points for South Ripley and Gunter put in 11 points. Sipples followed that with eight points.
South Ripley (13-5) visits Southwestern (Hanover) tonight in a battle of unbeaten Ohio River Valley Conference teams. The Rebels are currently 4-0 and in first place while the Raiders are in second at 3-0.
