Jac-Cen-Del High School announced last week that Gage Unrath and Seth Pohle are valedictorian and salutatorian of the Class of 2020.
Valedictorian Gage Unrath is the son of Vincent and Jennifer Unrath. He plans to attend Purdue University and major in mathematics.
Unrath was involved in the Math Academic Team, Social Studies Academic Team, Rube Goldberg, and the High School Robotics Team during his high school career. He was named to the National Honor Society and was also named Ripley County’s recipient of the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship this year.
Unrath says his geometry and engineering teacher, Mr. Anthony Moorman, was his most influential teacher in high school. “He influenced me by encouraging my growth as a problem-solver and has been a great friend as well as a great teacher. I think all teachers should take notes from him,” Unrath says.
Outside of school Unrath enjoys playing video games and continuously challenging himself in mathematics. “I enjoy teaching myself new areas of math and constantly practicing my skills,” he says.
His advice for next year’s seniors? “I’d say beware of senior-itis. It’s a real problem and you’ll want to procrastinate more than you ever have before. If you manage to beat senior-itis, you’ll fly through your senior year with no problems.”
Salutatorian Seth Pohle is the son of Michael and Becky Pohle. He plans to attend Purdue University and major in computer engineering.
Pohle was involved in cross country, track, Rube Goldberg, band, and Drama Club backstage during his high school career.
Pohle says retired engineering teacher Mr. Paul Thole was his most influential teacher in high school. “His philosophies helped shape the career that I wanted to go into and made it more specific,” Pohle says.
Outside of school, Pohle enjoys wiring circuits and learning new computer skills.
His advice for next year’s seniors? “Be proud of your school and enjoy your high school career because it will be over before you know it.”
