Darrell W. Smith, 71, of Cross Plains passed away Wednesday, March 27, 2019 at his home. He was born on Splinters Ridge in Jefferson County on August 12, 1947, the son of James and Shirley Osborn Smith. He was married to Heidi Morganstein on August 24, 2000 and she preceded him in death on March 14, 2015. 

Survivors include one son Kevin Smith of Berlin, Germany; two daughters Carolyn Lukas of Belgium, and Belinda Smith of Berlin, Germany; three grandchildren; one brother Bo (Cheryl) Smith of Friendship; five sisters Anita Cook, Cheryl (Mike) Beverly, and Mary McCleary all of Cross Plains, Karen (Everett) Scholl of Rexville, and Anna Johnson of Madison. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother Donald Smith. 

Mr. Smith was a 1966 graduate of Cross Plains High School. He was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War where he served as an SP 5 with the 31st Infantry Division from 1967 to 1973. For service to his country Darrell received the National Defense Service Medal, the Army Occupation of Germany Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal. In civilian life he worked as a meter reader for the Southeastern Indiana REMC.

Graveside services were held at Tuesday, April 2 at the Akers Cemetery in Friendship with Rev. Sherman Hughes officiating. Military graveside rites were conducted by the Versailles American Legion. Memorials may be given to the cemetery in care of the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles.
