Delbert Moore

Delbert Leon Moore, 89, of Tipton, formerly of Osgood passed away at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, December 30, 2023 at Hickory Creek at Madison. He was born at Allen’s Crossing near Osgood on November 5, 1934, the son of William and Edith Pickett Moore. He was married to Betty Henderson on September 4, 1954 and she preceded him in death on August 5, 1990. He was also preceded in by his second wife Iva Hornak Moore and is survived by his wife Esther Bagley Moore.

Other survivors include one daughter Janie (David) Walsh of Hardin, Kentucky; three sons Dennis (Rose) Moore and William (Fran) Moore both of Kenansville, Florida, and Timothy (Emily) Moore of Madison; 20 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter; step-children Maurice (Mary) Bagley of Arthur, Illinois, Dennis (Mindy) Bagley of Greentown, Katrina (John) Hubbard of Broomfield, Colorado, and Darrin (Jo Anne) Bagley of Tipton; two sisters Margaret Sanders of McCordsville and Carole (John) Poland of Kelford, North Carolina. He was also preceded in death by his parents, his brother William Moore, Jr., and his sister Anna Caudill.

Mr. Moore was a 1953 graduate of Osgood High School. His working career spanned 40 years as he began right out of high school working for a brief time for Kroger. Later in 1953 he started with the Southeastern Indiana REMC in Osgood, finishing there as Superintendent in 1978. He then became manager of the Whitewater Valley REMC at Liberty, a position he held until his retirement in 1995. While living in Liberty, Leon served as president of the Union County Economic Developmental Corporation and was named Union County’s Citizen of the Year in 1992. He was active in Republican politics in both Union and Ripley County and was a former Ripley County Sheriff candidate. Upon his retirement, Leon went to Florida and enjoyed fishing and a part time job at the Publix Supermarket in North Port. Leon was a member of the Hopewell Baptist Church.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, January 3rd at 12 p.m. at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Leon’s granddaughter Rev. Kristi Jones officiating. Burial was in the Hopewell Cemetery. Visitation was also held on Wednesday at 10 a.m. Memorials may be to the Hopewell Cemetery in care of the funeral home.
