Denny and Phyllis Nead

Dennis Edward Nead was born on December 21, 1926, at the home of Stanley (Pat) and Mary Jo Porsch Nead of Osgood, Indiana. Denny grew up on Elm Street in Osgood, he went to Osgood Grade School and High School in which he played on the Osgood Cowboys Basketball team. He graduated in 1945 with the Class of 1945 – Mildred Brown , Mary Myers, Charles Meyer, Dennis Nead, Marilyn Klappert, Bettie Lieman, Hellen Deller, Robert Thomas, Rosemary Simon, Doris Stoneking, John Laswell, Loraine Howell, O H Jenkins, Lorraine Black, Oval Bolt, CJ Wildman, Wilber Comer, Mable Comer, John Comer Jr. , Rosemary Mame Igam, Elizabeth Ward, Emma Stephens and Mary Wagner.

After graduating he served in the US Army and was sent to Germany. Denny was in the 1st Brigade at Headquarters Office of the Constabulary of the office of the commanding General in Wiesbaden, Hesse, Germany of which he attended the Nuremberg Trails when held. Upon coming back to America and coming home to Osgood, he worked at the Dairy Plant for a time. He met the love of his life after returning home a Blonde, Green Eyed girl named Phyllis Marie Greive of rural Aurora, Indiana. They dated for 7 years and married Phyllis at St Mary’s Catholic Church in Aurora Indiana, on November 28, 1953, in the rectory as Phyllis was Lutheran and Denny had been raised Catholic and a member of St Johns Catholic Church in Osgood in which his Porsch side of the family were founding members of St Johns. Ironically Phyllis Greive’s family were founding members of St Johns Lutheran church in Aurora.

Denny and Phyllis resided on Elm Street when they first married. They moved above The 5 and 10 (store) after their daughter and only child Denise Ann was born in June of 1954.

Denny was a member and past Post Commander of the Osgood American Legion Post 267, member 40& 8, Knights Of Columbus, and St John’s Catholic Church.

He then went to work for Akins Trucking Company driving and delivering items to businesses over the area. In 1960 Denny and Phyllis bought the McIntosh home at 245 S Buckeye Street, Osgood Indiana. This is where they raised their daughter and would own it for many years. He worked for his brother-in-law James Fallis at the Fallis Funeral Home. In 1966, he went to Mortuary College in Indianapolis, Indiana. He was a member of Pi Sigma Eta Kappa Chapter, Summa Cum Laude. Denny was very active in the Osgood Community. In December 1972, Dennis spoke to local papers regarding the town of Osgood, which had a population of 1,800 and needed a second doctor. “But we just haven’t had any luck. It was to know avail.”

In January 1977, Denny bought the funeral home and the name was changed to Fallis & Nead. Dennys son in law went to Mortuary College in Cincinnati in January of 1981 the name then changed to Fallis & Nead & Clark. In 1982 name changed to Nead & Clark, when Son in Law and Daughter bought another Funeral Home in Aurora, Indiana. Denise and her husband moved to Florida after selling the Aurora Business as Mr. Clark went to work for SCI Funeral Services. The Nead’s sold the business on December 31, 1987, to Bill and Lila Neal, very good family friends for many years.

Denny and Phyllis moved to Cape Coral, Florida enjoying the Florida lifestyle boating and beaching. They moved to Fort Myers at the Forest where the Neads continued to enjoy their family up to the time of his passing. On July 6, 2005 he succumbed to Alzheimer’s after 10 plus years of the disease, at Hope Hospice, Fort Myers, Florida. Denny’s Interment with military honors was held on Monday July 11, 2005 at 12 Noon In the Chapel of Fort Myers Memorial Gardens Funeral Home. His parents Stanley (Pat) Nead and Mary Johanna Porsch Nead. A sister, Peggy Fallis preceded him in death. Surviving his beloved wife of 51 years, Phyllis M. Greive Nead whom he married on November 28, 1953; one daughter, Denise Ann (Robert) Clark of Fort Myers; two granddaughters, April Mercado and Heidi Strange; three great-grandchildren, Brittany Taylor Ratliff, Hayden Michael Strange and Sydney Allison Strange; and one nephew, Robin Fallls, Fort Myers Memorial Gardens, where he had worked part time for many years after coming to Florida.

PHYLLIS NEAD

Phyllis Marie (Greive) Nead was born on September 23, 1931, at the Greive family home in French, Ohio County, Indiana. Her parents were Victor Greive and Margaret Cathrine Spencer Greive.

Phyllis’s family moved after the flood and death of her baby sister Wanda Lee (Bonnie) to the Payton Dairy farm on Laughery creek now known as the Greive Farm. Growing up on the farm was full of many adventures. She was a devoted Lutheran growing up. Going to grade school at St John’s Lutheran School, Aurora and graduating from Aurora High School in May of 1950. After high school she went to work in Cincinnati at Good Samaritan Hospital then back to Aurora at the Dearborn County Auditor’s office.

She met Denny Nead at a dance in Lawrenceburg, In. They dated for seven years, before marrying on November 28, 1953, at St Mary’s Catholic Church Rectory Aurora.

Phyllis came to Osgood in 1953, where she and Denny had their first and only child, Denise Ann (Dee). Her first friends in Osgood were Pat and Allen Grieshop. Before she moved to Florida to be with her daughter’s family, she was a Medical Assistant at Dr George Row’s office, worked at the REMC in accounting, and was Co-Owner of Nead & Clark Funeral Home Osgood, Indiana.

She was a member of the American Cancer Society, St John’s Lutheran Church, founding member and 1st President of Osgood Beautification Committee, Cape Coral New Resident Club, Spencer Family Historical Society, Daughters of the American Revolution serving as Chaplain in two chapters in Colorado and Florida.

After Denny’s death, due to unforeseen circumstances, Phyllis moved to Colorado to live at Dee and Bobby’s which would be a 18 year journey. She enjoyed getting to be with her Granddaughter and her family. She then relocated back to Florida with Bob and Dee when SCI said Bob come back to Florida, we need you. She enjoyed her time in Plant City and South Pasadena area of Florida. She then moved to Daytona and lived on the Atlantic Ocean with Dee and Bobby, then the home in Ormond nestled between two state parks and her final home before heaven.

On September 14, 2023 at her daughter and son in laws home in Ormond Beach Fl, Phyllis Marie Greive Nead got her wings and went to walk with the angels in heaven with her family members who proceeded her in death, her parents – Victor and Margaret Spencer Greive, Great Grandparents Fred and Lula Mountz Greive, David and Sadie Kennedy Spencer, Sister Wanda Lee (Bonnie) (1933-1937); Brothers Vic Jr (1930-2021), David (1935-2021), Jimmy (1937-1994), Kenneth (1941-2020) Phyllis is survived by daughter Denise (Dee) Clark and son-in-law Robert (Bobby) Clark, of Ormond Beach, Florida. 2 granddaughters April Bower and Heidi (Alan) Strange, 4 great grandchildren Brittany T Ratliff, Hayden M Strange, Sydney (Sydda) Strange and Keaton Strange, all in Colorado. Her brother Donald (Shirley) Greive, Sister Peggy (Steve) Klepper, Sister-in-Laws Rosemary Greive and Jackie Greive, along with many Nieces, and Nephews.

Funeral service for immediate family members was celebrated at 10:00 AM, Monday, September 25, 2023 at the Chapel at Fort Myers Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, 1589 Colonial Boulevard, Fort Myers. At the conclusion of this ceremony, family recessed to adjacent Memorial Gardens Cemetery where Phyllis was laid to rest alongside her husband Denny at their Estate located in the Meditation Garden.

The family will have a Memorial Celebration of her life in Indiana at the Funeral Home in Osgood, IN per her request on Friday August 30, 2024 at 11 am.
