Geraldine (“Jerri”) Thayer
Geraldine “Jerri” Sue (Pettit) Thayer, a cherished member of the Osgood community, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 10, 2024, at the age of 77, surrounded by the family she adored. Born on January 21, 1947, in Batesville, Indiana, Jerri was the daughter of the late Herman and Ruby Jean (Burnside) Pettit and granddaughter of the late Helen Sembach.
Jerri was a lifelong resident of Osgood, where she grew up with her brother and sister. She was a graduate of Jac-Cen-Del High School’s Class of 1965 and continued her education at business college before starting a family of her own. She married her high school sweetheart, Doug Thayer, and together they built a beautiful life, welcoming their two daughters, Angie and Andi.
Jerri dedicated many years of her professional life to the Ripley County Courthouse, where she served in both the Clerk’s and Recorder’s offices with compassion and a friendly smile. Her warm heart and desire to help others were hallmarks of her character.
Jerri was a gifted and creative soul whose talents knew no bounds. From crafting beautiful stained-glass pieces to designing stunning floral arrangements, her artistic flair brightened every space she touched. Jerri had a true passion for decorating, and she delighted in using her skills to make special occasions memorable and beautiful for her community. She took great pride in being an active member of the Osgood and Versailles Tri-Kappa, the Osgood Moose Lodge, and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Osgood Fire Department, where she generously gave her time and talents.
Jerri’s legacy of kindness, generosity, and selflessness touched everyone who knew her. Her wisdom and listening ears were gift to all who knew her. Above all, Jerri’s greatest love was her family. She leaves behind her husband of 59 years, Doug Thayer; daughters Angie (John) Lovins of Osgood and Andi (George) Murray of Tampa, Florida; grandchildren Spencer, Shelbie (Allen) Hooton, Jaden, Carson, and George; and her newest great-granddaughter Millie Hooton arriving in July to help fill a void in all of their hearts. She is also survived by her brother Ritchie (Darlene) Pettit and sister Darinda Peetz. Jerri was preceded in death by her parents.
A visitation was held on Sunday, September 15, 2024, from 1-4 p.m. at Neal’s Funeral Home in Osgood, followed by a service at 4 p.m. Burial took place at Greendale Cemetery. In honor of Jerri’s giving spirit, memorial contributions may be made to Greendale Cemetery in care of the funeral home. Online condolences can be shared at Nealsfuneralhome.net.
Jerri’s light, love, and laughter will forever be missed, but her spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
