Steven Ray Owens, 70, of Hanover passed away Tuesday, March 9, 2021 at the Richwood Nursing Center in LaGrange, Kentucky. He was born in Bedford, Indiana on December 10, 1950 the son of Clarence and Maudie Arthur Owens. He was married to Carol Sue Furlow on June 27, 1991 and she preceded him in death on February 18, 2019. Survivors include one son Paul (Bridgett) Owens of Bedford; one daughter Sarah (Adam) Coleman of North Vernon; two step-sons Chad George of Hanover and Christopher George of Holton; grandchildren Kadesia and Javan Owens, and Luke and Chrisanna Coleman; two step-grandchildren; two brothers Orin Wayne (Sandra) Owens of Springville and Estell Owens of Mitchell; one sister Barbara (Lonnie) Jones of Bedford. He was also preceded in death by his parents, granddaughter Ava Coleman, step-son Justin Dale George, his brother Robert Dale Owens, and his sisters Myrna Jewell and Patricia Owens.


Mr. Owens worked for many years as a mechanic for the CSX Railroad, retiring in 1998. Steven was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War serving with the Amphibian Engineer Corp from 1971 to 1974. For service to his country Steven received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and was qualified as a sharpshooter. He loved to attend auctions, hunt mushrooms, and was well known in the area as the “fruit and vegetable man.” Steven’s wishes were to be cremated and a graveside service will be held on Monday, March 22nd at 2pm at the New Marion Cemetery with military graveside rites by the Madison American Legion. Memorials may be given to the New Marion Cemetery in care of the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles.
