Thelma Schmaltz
Thelma Schmaltz, 94, of Milan passed away at 3:20 a.m., Saturday, April 18, 2020 at Ripley Crossing. She was born near Elrod on June 23, 1925 the daughter of R. Cecil and Mollie Huntington Delap. She was married to Wallace Schmaltz on January 13, 1945 and he preceded her in death on September 2, 1985.
Survivors include three sons Larry (Janice) Schmaltz of Milan, David (Denise) Schmaltz of Napoleon, and Chris (Mary Jane) Schmaltz of Milan; 8 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her parents, granddaughter Jerilyn Schmaltz, great-grandson Trey David Schmaltz, her brothers Roy and Alvin Delap, and her sister Marie Gault.
Mrs. Schmaltz was a 1943 graduate of Versailles High School. Throughout her life Thelma had worked at the Jay C in Milan, Busteed’s 5 & 10 in Milan, and the Ripley County Farm Bureau Hatchery in Osgood. Thelma was a member of the Versailles Baptist Church where she was active in the ABWM and served as a trustee and deaconess. She was also a 60 year member of the Milan Esther Rebekah Lodge. She enjoyed working with Wallace on the farm and spending time with her family.
Due to the current health pandemic, funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family with Rev. Mike Cantrell officiating. Burial will be in the Washington Cemetery at Elrod. The Schmaltz family will hold a celebration of life for Thelma at a later date. Memorials may be given to the Washington Cemetery or the Versailles Baptist Church building fund in care of the funeral home.
