William M. Payne

William M. Payne

William M. Payne, age 90 of Batesville, Indiana, passed away peacefully in his home on Sunday, October 6, 2024. Born in Indianapolis, Indiana, he is the son of Miles Payne and Julia (Nee: Reidy) Heaney. He married Evelyn Barnhill on August 8, 1952, in Indianapolis and she preceded him in death on February 27, 2023. Bill grew up on the northside of Indianapolis and attended Shortridge High School. At age 18, he married Evelyn, the love of his life. They were together for 70 years. Bill was born with an entrepreneurial spirit. At age seven, he was setting bowling alley pins. He always had lots of irons in the fire. He went on to own and manage several trucking and transportation businesses. He loved history and was an avid reader. Even at age ninety, he read the daily newspaper and watched the news every night. Bill and Evelyn were urban pioneers, setting up residence in downtown Indianapolis long before it was trendy. After moving to Batesville upon retirement, they enjoyed long drives in the country, followed by an ice cream stop at the local McDonalds. Life was not easy for Bill and Evelyn, but they worked hard and lived a good life. They successfully raised four children. Bill always said he wanted to live until age 90, like his mother, Julia, and he accomplished this goal. He is survived by his daughters Kathy (John) Schuerman of Batesville and Susie Payne (Rich Able) of Indianapolis; sons Mike Payne of Indianapolis; Steve Payne (deceased) and daughter-in-law Margie Payne of Indianapolis; brother James (Sue) Heaney of Indianapolis and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. In accordance with Bill’s wishes, cremation was chosen by the family. There will be a Celebration of Life open house, November 2nd from 12:00 to 2:00pm at Manley’s Irish Mutt Restaurant and Bar, 7041 E. 10th St., Indianapolis. Family and friends are welcome. Memorial contributions may be made to Southeastern Indiana Voices for Children, 122 South Depot Street, Batesville, Indiana 47006. For online condolences go to weigelfh.com.
