Habitat and weather are two big factors which affect quail populations. We can’t control the weather but we can influence the quantity and quality of quail habitat. Winter can be the toughest time for quail. However, the arrival of frigid cold and snow doesn’t necessarily mean a death sentence for quail. These hardy birds can survive quite well in tough winters as long as they have quality winter cover available. Pastures and hayfields can provide valuable quail habitat if managed appropriately.
