South Ripley’s varsity boys basketball was able to make some noise over the weekend, going 2-2 at the annual Charlie Hughes Shootout in Indianapolis.
Carmel and Westfield played host to the event that featured many of the state’s top teams heading into the new school year. Greensburg, Lawrenceburg, Switzerland County and Madison were other participating teams from Southeastern Indiana.
South Ripley made a big statement on Friday night, picking up a pair of wins against two Class 4A teams. The Raiders began the weekend with a 70-52 win over Chesterton and followed it up in the nightcap with a 91-82 victory over Southport. A bit of fatigue played a factor one day after as the green and white fell in a pair of battles to similar size opponents.
The Raiders fell on a buzzer beater to Centerville in game one on Saturday and rounded the shootout with a loss to Liberty Christian, a team that appeared in the Class A Final Four this past winter.
Head coach Seve Beach and company received several rave reviews from media members and casual fans in attendance over the weekend. A pair of incoming seniors in Cole Henry and Blaine Ward received much praise based on individual performances. Henry posted 107 points over four games and unofficial statistics had him at three double-doubles out of those four. Ward went off for 42 points against Southport on Friday and ended his weekend with a total of 93 points while also stuffing the stat sheets inside the rebounding and assist departments.
Chancie Volz, Drew Volz and Bryson Sipples played big minutes as they have the entire summer slate in the month of June. Others dressing varsity this summer for the Raiders have included Dylan Jesse, Brogan Buchanan, Landon Werner and Blake Gunter.
South Ripley has been busy the entire month of June and will be winding down this week prior to the IHSAA’s moratorium period beginning on July 1.
