It was not a repeat performance in terms of the team standings but Versailles American Legion Post #173 still boasts a state-best as South Ripley High School student Anna Block captured the American Legion Junior Shooting State Championship on Saturday in Greenfield.
Four legions across the state competed in the annual winter match that was won this year by Jasper Post #147 with a score of 967-15. Versailles was a narrow runner-up at 959-19.
It was the third individual state championship for Block who yet again proved herself as Versailles’ top shooter and added to her long list of accolades. Block’s day at the state match concluded with an overall score of 264-6 and with that was a first place spot in the standing shoot (84-1) and third place finishes in the kneeling shoot (87-1) and prone shoot (93-4). Teammate Nevaeh Hardin finished as state runner-up with a total score of 264-6 and she finished second in the standing shoot at 81-0.
Chloe Grable gave Versailles a first place shooter in the prone shoot with a score of 94-6. She would finish 14th overall on the individual leaderboard with a 220-6 and three more teammates followed. Savannah Steele placed 15th at 218-1, Quinn Faust was 16th at 218-1 and Mason Comer rounded out Post #173 shooters with a 197-1 and 21st place finish.
