Cross Plains business to partner with community to help those in need
Food banks across the area braced as the looming deadline of November 1 rolled around with the knowledge that the government SNAP program or what some refer to as food stamps might not be available.
Places that provide assistance to those in need can include food items, prepared meals, furniture, hygiene items and much more. Some of these pantries get items from government run agencies and may be low at this time as well.
The government shutdown has created problems for some who depend on various programs. The Cross Plains Live Online Sales has been trying to pass savings on to local people for the past five years. This group offers items almost always at half the cost of the retail store. They hold auctions mostly on Sunday evenings and sell a variety of items. This is open to anyone who wants to log on, get a buying number, and begin purchasing.
Some people may not know the depths of this group. They also help others on a regular basis. They give to local organizations through what they call the “Blessing Box” which includes a variety of items. They have helped children at Christmastime, those in need at times of fires, and much more.
They have stepped up again as Mike Taylor told the Osgood Journal they will begin accepting deer. Here’s how it works. You can bring the legally tagged deer to Cross Plains, and the processing will be donated. Then the meat will be given to those in need. Some hunters just enjoy the sport of hunting and aren’t interested in keeping the meat. Others might find it too expensive to have it processed. Or some people just might enjoy hunting to help others.
Taylor said if people are interested in giving or receiving, they can contact him through the Cross Plains Live Online Sales or send him a message on Messenger. He works with another group that gives to those less fortunate and says they will do everything they can to help people get the needed food and other items during this time. Monetary donations will stay within the local community and will be used to purchase food items in bulk to help fill food sacks for families. “We want to put everything in a sack that will provide a complete meal,” noted Taylor. His goal is to have the food boxes ready the week of or before Thanksgiving, depending on the donations. There will also be clothing available. “If you know a family in need, we will try to help the best way we can,” Taylor noted.
