Larry W. Webster II, 46, of Aurora, has been charged with Attempted Murder after an incident occurred last week that eventually spanned two counties.
According to information from the ISP, the incident occurred around 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 19, when several police agencies responded to a crash on US 421 near Michigan Road in northern Jefferson County. The driver of a blue 1991 Chevrolet truck had left the scene of the accident after rear-ending a vehicle while travelling northbound on US 421. After the driver of the vehicle that had been rear-ended got out, Webster allegedly intentionally struck the vehicle a second time and struck the other driver who was standing next to his vehicle. The driver, who was not identified by police, was injured and taken to the hospital. Witnesses said they saw the abandoned pickup truck near US 421 on North Old Michigan Road with the front end smashed.
Responding officers located Webster’s vehicle abandoned on Old Michigan Road, with Webster walking nearby. Police say when officers were taking Webster into custody, an altercation occurred, causing an Indiana State Trooper to sustain injuries. Authorities told the Osgood Journal that situation is still under investigation.
For a short time, North Old Michigan Road was closed to traffic and multiple police agencies responded to the scene. The incident with the officer being battered occurred in front of a home on that road with residents saying it was a tense situation. The officer, who has not been identified, was taken to the hospital and was treated and released.
Webster was taken to Norton King’s Daughters’ Hospital in Madison and then transferred to another hospital for additional evaluation and treatment. He was later released and incarcerated in the Jefferson County Jail.
Troopers from the Indiana State Police-Versailles Post were assisted by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Ripley County Sheriff’s Office, Osgood and Versailles police departments, Jefferson and Ripley County prosecutor’s offices.
Webster’s criminal history includes a charge of Torturing or mutilating a vertebrate animal, domestic battery, and striking a law enforcement animal in Dearborn County. He also was charged with Burglary – breaking and entering a dwelling in Jefferson County.
