South Ripley girls basketball celebrated Senior Night on Friday amid a big ORVC win against Jac-Cen-Del. Pictured from left-to-right are Lady Raider seniors Sam Curl, Kaiya Rinear, Aubrey Werner and Emily Parks.
While it unfortunately came at the expense of Jac-Cen-Del, both South Ripley and Southwestern (Hanover) have clinched shares of the Ohio River Valley Conference girls basketball title after both defeating the Lady Eagles this past week.
The ORVC is still awaiting a potential third team to share with South Ripley and Southwestern who both sport 5-1 conference marks. Due to illness and weather, Shawe Memorial still sits at 4-1 and is in need of a matchup against Rising Sun. That will happen in Class A Sectional 60 and it is rumored that the game will also count as that ORVC matchup if the two squads meet in Friday’s semifinal.
It has been a whirlwind of emotions for the South Ripley girls basketball program in recent days but the green and white were able to wear their heart on their sleeve on Friday night and score a 65-48 victory at home over Jac-Cen-Del to clinch its championship share.
The Lady Raiders, who also celebrated Senior Night, were without sophomore Illana Prosser who is recovering from injuries sustained in a serious two-vehicle accident last week. Prosser was able to be in attendance to witness the win.
A strong start by Jac-Cen-Del allowed them a 15-13 lead after one quarter but the rest of the night belonged to South Ripley who answered with back-to-back runs of 15-9 and 19-9 to lead by 14 points going into the final eight minutes. The Lady Raiders dropped another 18 points in the fourth quarter as the advantage only continued to widen.
In her final home game, South Ripley senior continued her march to 1400 career points and recorded a double-double of 19 points and 11 rebounds which also went along with seven assists. Junior Ellie Combs added 17 points and Evelyn Kelly scored 11 points. Kelly and senior Aubrey Werner paced the defensive efforts with four steals apiece.
Brooklyn Simon and Brynlie Simon each scored 11 points to lead Jac-Cen-Del. Tinley Enneking added 10 points.
Southwestern clinched its share on Saturday afternoon by defeating Jac-Cen-Del 75-29 in Hanover. The Lady Rebels (16-6) led by as many as 46 points and the mercy rule with running clock was in effect during the second half.
Savannah Nussbaum had 19 points for the Lady Rebels and both Rorie Scroggins and Olivia Simpson tallied 11 points. Jac-Cen-Del got nine points from Enneking and eight points from Brooklyn Simon.
South Ripley (16-7) goes to Austin tonight for Class 2A Sectional 45 opening round action against 12th-ranked Brownstown Central. Jac-Cen-Del (6-16) hosts Shawe Memorial this evening in the opening round of Class A
Sectional 60.
