the Bookman’s booth persevered through some engine trouble, to arrive just in time for the Friendship Flea Market. They had a large aisle of various books – children and adults alike could walk away with at least one they were going to read. They were happy to be there despite the trouble from their bus, keeping their 26th year streak attending alive!
It’s that time of year again! The Friendship Flea Market opened on Saturday, June 13 and will be running until Sunday, June 21 daily from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm – with some music guests running later into the evening. If unfamiliar with what locals have affectionately called “the shoot,” the Friendship Flea Market stretches along State Road 62 just east of Friendship.
From humble beginnings, founders Tom and Rosemary Kerr, hosted the first market in August of 1968 with only 14 booth spaces… To what it’s grown into now, with nearly 500 booth spaces. There truly is something for everybody who steps foot onto the property. Each booth is different – featuring antiques, collectibles, books, tools, guns and knives, vintage items… not to mention the various food! This event brings people not only from Ripley County, but patrons from around the country. So, it is important for travelers to remember to be aware of their surroundings as Ripley County has an influx of visitors who may be unfamiliar with the area’s backroads.
The market is operating alongside the National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association (NMLRA), so don’t be alarmed if you hear some nearby gunfire while browsing the booths! It’s an interesting blend of events, one highlights a rich blend of craftsmanship, tradition, and history, while the other captures the spirit of small-town commerce and close community ties. From shooting matches and flea market bargains to handmade crafts, local food, and the overall atmosphere, visitors find that Friendship delivers a truly unique experience.
If you’re wanting to camp at the next Friendship Flea Market, now is the time to be asking. The market will be hosted September 12– 20 of this year. Check out their website page at friendshipfleamarket.com for more info!
