Nelson Eugene Hughes

Nelson Eugene Hughes, 91, of Cookeville, Tennessee, and formerly of Anderson, Indiana, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, August 29, 2020 at home with family. He was born on March 3, 1929 in Westport, Indiana, a son to the late Roscoe Bates Hughes and Florence French Hughes. He was married to the love of his life, Madonna May Smith, on June 30, 1957 and she preceded him in death on June 23, 2018.


Nelson served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Early in his life he was a farmer in the Osgood, Indiana area. He was a carpenter by trade and a master locksmith. He built and remodeled many homes around central Indiana. He was very talented and could build or fix almost anything. He retired from Anderson Community School System in Indiana after 27 years as the Supervisor of Maintenance. Nelson was a dedicated member of Grace Holiness Church for over 30 years.


Those left to cherish his memory include a daughter, Rhonda Crouch of Cookeville, TN; a son, Kevin (Elizabeth) Hughes of Bethany, OK, eight grandchildren, Esther (Danny) Coker; Kristi (Robert) Fye; Patrick (Megan) Morrow; Heather (Israel) Fry; Jamin (Andrea) Hughes; Tyler (Ryan Padgett) Crouch; Emily Craig, and Eric (Callie) Hughes; 21 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.


In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by step-mother, Francis Grunden Hughes; sisters, Edith DeWire; Eileen Zapfe; Aileen Cardinal; brothers, Cecil Hughes; and Keith Hughes.


A brief viewing for family and friends will be from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 5, 2020 at Union Flat Rock Baptist Church, 6303 N County Road 975 W, Osgood.


Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 5, 2020 Union Flat Rock Baptist Church, with Pastor Tim Wiford and Rev. Malvin McCullough officiating with interment to follow in Union Flat Rock Cemetery.
