Lamar Smith

Lamar Smith, 82, of Benham passed away at 4:45am, Thursday, January 27, 2022 at Ripley Crossing in Milan. He was born on the farm where he spent his entire life on May 28, 1939, the son of Chauncey and Evelyn Ehlers Smith. He was married to Mary Buchanan on June 19, 2004 and she survives.


Other survivors include his step-children Kenneth Lee (Sue) Buchanan of Benham, Beverly (Jerry) Ochs of Moores Hill, and Marty (Mike) Blann of Sullivan; 7 step-grandchildren; one brother Dennis (Barbara) Smith of Batesville; brother-in-law Kenny Mclean of Columbus, his niece Kimberly (Brian) Wedding of Lawrenceburg, and his nephews Deron (Malena) Smith of Batesville and Tim (Liz) McLean of Columbus. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Jean McLean.


Mr. Smith was a 1957 graduate of Versailles High School and served in the 2480th US Air Force from 1963 to 1969. In civilian life Lamar was a 31 year employee of Cummins Engine in Columbus and also worked his farm. He had his pilots license and owned his own plane which he enjoyed taking for Sunday afternoon “drives”. Lamar was a lifelong member of the Benham United Methodist Church and was an honorary member of the Versailles Lions Club.


Funeral services will be held at 11am on Tuesday, February 1 at the Benham United Methodist Church with Gary Brooks officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will also be at the church on Tuesday beginning at 10am. Memorials may be given to the church in care of the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles.
