Howard Young

Howard Young, 80, of Friendship passed away on June 8, 2020 at the Margaret Mary Community Hospital in Batesville. He was born on August 27, 1939 in Devils Lake, North Dakota the son of Roy and Edith Bartlett Young.


He was married to Hester Chapman on June 24, 1973 and she survives. He was a 1957 graduate of Devils Lake High School and graduated with a degree in electrical engineering from North Dakota State University in 1961. He went to work for the FAA and spent five years traveling and installing airplane navigational aids and then in 1966 moved to the Kansas City office and did communications engineering. In 1973 he moved to Chicago and worked at the FAA regional office as automation manager, transferring to the FAA headquarters in Washington, DC in 1983. Howard worked in systems engineering there and retired from the FAA in 1994. He was active with the NMLRA in Friendship for many years and in July of 1994 he and Hester moved to Friendship. They had attended every shoot at Friendship since 1977. As part of the muzzle loading sport Howard became quite proficient at building flat priming and powder horns, and made most of the equipment he used, including building rifles and pistols for his personal use.


Howard’s wishes were to be cremated and a celebration of his life will be held on Monday, September 14 at 4 p.m. at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with visitation beginning at 3 p.m.
