Mrs. Thelma Kay Haupt Nickell, age 79, of Cross Plains, Indiana entered this life on May 30, 1942 in Selma, Indiana. She was the loving daughter of the late Eugene and Ruth Lines Haupt. She was raised in Desota and graduated in 1960 from Desota High School. On December 17, 1960 she was united in marriage to Rodney Phillips in Muncie, Indiana. This union of 25 years was blessed with a daughter, Brenda and a son, Brian. She resided for many years in Muncie and worked for Prestige Portraits as a photo finisher from 1969-2006. On December 18, 2013 she was united in marriage to Clayton “Nick” Nickell at the River Valley Community Church in Madison. She enjoyed living in the Cross Plains community and was a member of the River Community Church. She had also held membership in the Art Guild. Kay loved music and was known as the “Trumpet Lady”, she enjoyed arts and crafts, fishing, reading, and horseback riding. Kay died on Monday, April 4, 2022, at 10:00 a.m. at the Heritage House of Greensburg in Greensburg, Indiana.


Kay will be missed by her loving husband, Clayton “Nick” Nickell of Cross Plains, Indiana; her loving daughter, Brenda Craig and her husband Mike of Bloomington, Indiana; her loving son, Brian Phillips of Muncie, Indiana; her step sons, Timothy Lynn Nickell and his wife, Jenny of Columbus, Indiana, Dwight Alan Nickell and his wife, Mary of Columbus, Indiana, Brian Clayton Nickell and his wife, Anita of Jonesville, Indiana; her grandchildren, Matt Reece, Megan Attwood and her husband, Andrew and Leeanna Seppala; her great grandsons, Wesson and Gunner Seppala; her step grandchildren, Shawn, Sarah, Tony, Isaiah and Timothy; her brother, Robert Haupt of Muncie, Indiana; her brother in law, Henry Nickell and his wife, Angie of Cross Plains, Indiana; her sister in law, Lucy Nickell of Pleasant, Indiana; several nieces, nephews and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her father, Eugene Haupt, her mother, Ruth Lines Haupt, and her step grandson, Chris Nickell, died February 22, 2019.


Funeral services will be conducted Friday, April 8, 2022, at 1:00 p.m., by Pastor Doug Norman at the Bridge of Hope Worship Center, 4050 East County Road 50 South in Milan, Indiana. Interment will follow in the Cross Plains United Methodist Church Cemetery in Cross Plains, Indiana. Friends may visit Friday from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. at the Bridge of Hope Worship Center, 4050 East County Road 50 South in Milan, Indiana.
